Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How is PAYE calculated in South Africa for 2026?
PAYE is calculated on your annual taxable income using the 2026/2027 SARS tax brackets, then the primary (and any age-based) rebate is subtracted. The result is divided across the year to give your monthly PAYE deduction. This calculator applies the official tables automatically.
How much must you earn to pay tax in South Africa?
For the 2026/2027 tax year, individuals under 65 only start paying income tax once their annual taxable income exceeds the tax threshold (the level at which the primary rebate cancels out the tax due). Below that threshold no PAYE is payable.
Does this calculator include UIF and SDL?
Yes. It shows PAYE (income tax) plus UIF (1% employee contribution, capped at the monthly ceiling). SDL is an employer levy of 1% of payroll and is shown for reference — it is not deducted from your salary.
What is the difference between PAYE and income tax?
Income tax is the total tax you owe SARS for the year. PAYE ("Pay As You Earn") is the monthly portion your employer withholds and pays over to SARS on your behalf, so your annual tax is settled gradually rather than in one payment.
Are the 2026/2027 SARS rates up to date in this tool?
Yes — the brackets, rebates, thresholds and UIF ceiling are updated to the latest figures published by SARS for the 2026/2027 tax year.
